My name is Mark Pomeroy, CFP® and welcome to Compass Wealth Planning. I am so excited to be able to introduce myself and share my story!
They say to do what you love and it’ll never be work. While I mostly agree with that (sometimes it really is work!), I can say that when you find your passion work at it to be the best you can, and the work part will be even more rewarding. My passion is financial planning and serving people. I didn’t realize my passion for financial planning until several years after I was in the industry. You see, when you learn the industry in a call center you don’t always get to see the outcomes of your advice. I was fortunate to make it to a position where I could really get to know my clients. I was able to watch a financial plan that I recommended play out for a family. I don’t know who was more excited that they reached their goals, me or them! That’s when I realized passion!
I was blessed to start in the financial planning and investment industry at the age of 22. The financial world intrigued me and I wanted to learn everything I could. I learned about a lot of good that financial planning can accomplish and unfortunately, I learned about some of the bad that’s out there. After a few years I started hearing about so many people that were being taken advantage of by some “financial advisors” that turned out to be salesman out for a quick buck or in some cases even crooks. The latter part actually hits close to home. When I was younger I learned that a close family member was taken advantage of and lost their whole retirement nest egg. She was the sweetest person and I couldn’t believe someone would do that. Over the past several years we have all heard those stories or had them hit our families. These stories sadden me and motivate me to be the best financial planner I can be, and hopefully I can educate people and help them from being taken advantage of.
Through my years in the industry I came to realize that there are better ways to help people. With a goal of eventually starting my own firm I joined a boutique firm so that I can learn more about the Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) world. I really enjoy the RIA world and I found my entrepreneurial passion continued to light a fire in me to start my own firm.
I have learned so much and I have come away with so many valuable ideas on what a firm should provide clients. Three ideas have stood out to me: 1. Serve as a fiduciary not because of a possible law change, but because it’s the right thing to do. 2. I never want to sell a product that a larger firm requires me to sell for a bonus or commission. 3. I believe in providing a great client experience by providing excellent service, actionable advice, and great tools and resources to help you navigate through your financial life.
I hope that gives you some insight about me, and why I do what I do. Please reach out to me if you or someone you know could use some help navigating their financial lives.
